New Music Monday: Inherit The Stars

A confession: I always judge bands by their name. Then I judge them by the genre they categorise themselves by. Things like ‘pop punk, indie rock, metal’ are pretty acceptable, weird abstract concepts a bit less, unless the music really does sound like Bon Jovi riding an atom bomb through space. I don’t know if anyone’s used that term yet, but if not please feel free. You don’t have to credit me, just make your music representative of it.

Inherit The Stars

Listening to Inherit The Stars, I read the tags as ‘alternative metal pop rock sci-fi screamo UK’. Can’t say I’ve heard pop yet, but I’d like to throw electro into that mix. Not quite in an Enter Shikari, dub-step kind of way. More of a scream-heavy chords-quick disco-back to screaming kind of way. It sounds like the soundtrack to a shooting game, set on a spaceship in the distant future. Its quite refreshingly different.

The Sheffield 3-piece are planning their debut album release (untitled as far as I can tell) this May. For now, listen to the below and go check them out on facebook.com/inheritthestarsofficial

Rolo Tomassi new video ‘Howl’

I don’t feel like I champion enough women in rock to be honest, despite the blog name. That’s why it makes me happy when I can feature something like this, where it has nothing to do with the gender of the lead singer, its just simply great music.

I’ve loved Rolo Tomassi for a long time. I’d heard whispers of great things about them, which lead me to their show at the Radio 1 tent at Reading Festival a few years back. I was blown away. The energy of their performance. The fact that singer Eva Spence can walk onstage looking like that, and then produce a sound like THAT. This is one female that can rock it with the best of them:

Rolo Tomassi’s new album ‘Astraea’, featuring ‘Howl’ is out now.

Tonight Alive new video ‘Breakdown’

You know summer’s just around the corner when the driving songs start coming out. It makes me quite sad that I no longer have a car to drive (can’t afford it / don’t need one in London). If I did have a car though, this song would be top of my list to blare out the windows on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

I just caught the end of Tonight Alive at the Kerrang Tour in Brixton a few weeks ago. The Australian pop-punk 5 piece have been making waves with their energetic live shows, and habit of running around backstage completely naked (or so I’ve heard).

This lovely slice of rock-lite goodness features Benji Madden, of Good Charlotte fame. I don’t actually know what he’s up to these days, but its good to see him with a girl that’s not Paris Hilton.. As a disclaimer: I’m not suggesting that he’s dating lead singer Jenna McDougall. I have no idea about his personal life.

Friday Classic – Funeral For A Friend ‘Escape Artists Never Die’

Possibly the inspiration for my never-ending search for a decent pair of stripey socks. Funeral For A Friend may have changed (quite drastically), from their early years, but this still remains one of my favourite songs. It might be emo, but its good emo!

For their new work, check out their new video for the absolutely stomping ‘Nails’ here.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Alkaline Trio – ‘The Torture Doctor’

After having been fairly disappointed by the last single from goth-punk’s Alkaline Trio, I was preparing myself for the worst with this next one. (The worst from them being that it was nothing special).

This was actually a nice surprise. ‘The Torture Doctor’ is still Alkaline Trio in their purest form, the macabre themes, the simplistic, catchy hooks. This is the band really pushing forwards though, the vocals becoming almost sinister, the melodies creeping into something much deeper. Its not what I was expecting, its much, much better.

Wednesday Wish List – Stargazer Baby Pink Hair Dye

stargazer baby pink

In my younger years (read: before I had an office job) I went through all the colours. Brown, black, blue, purple, red, pink and now settling on blonde. It’s been a while though, and I still get that occasional craving to change..

My brief time of pink hair was a couple of years ago, when I was a Uni student. I used the Stargazer Baby Pink hair dye then, carefully applied by my (terrified) housemate. I loved it straight away.

It’s annoying how fast the colour fades though, but its still tempting to try it again. I’ve heard Toni and Guy do a better job, but I haven’t researched the costs yet and I’m on a budget!

Here’s me, years ago:

Stargazar is available from their website, Amazon, Attitude clothing and some alternative clothing stores. It costs about £5 per bottle, with 2 / 3 recommended for long or thick hair. (I’d buy three to be safe, you don’t want to run out halfway!).

New Music Monday: Bring Me The Horizon ‘Sleepwalking’

Well after the storming ‘Shadow Moses’ video was released a few weeks ago, I’ve been eagerly awaiting more from Bring Me The Horizon‘s new album ‘Sempiternal’, out April 1. Just to show that the last single wasn’t a fluke, they’ve now released the equally chilling ‘Sleepwalking’.

The video is shot in the snow again, raising the question: did they shoot them all on one snowy day? Anyway, its pretty eerie and features the standard ghostly looking girl wandering about while the band perform to disinterested locals in a community centre-esque bar. Oh, and there’s some random shots of barbie dolls.

Track is awesome though.

You can pre-order Sempiternal from the band’s store here.

Sunday Comment: Bullying (Plus new video from Escape The Fate)

When I’m looking for music to post about on here, I always try to find something with personal relevance. It could be that I’ve had a really good experience seeing the band live, or have a specific memory associated with them. In this case though, its that I can completely relate to the content.

Escape The Fate‘s new video ‘Ungrateful’ focuses on the cycle of bullying, from school, to home, to workplaces and how it impacts on the lives of those who experience it. (I warn you now, the graphics are pretty shocking).

I was unfortunate enough to experience bullying in school first-hand. It wasn’t pleasant (obviously). In fact, its had a huge effect on the rest of my life so far. It took years for me to get back the person that I was before it started. And I had it lightly compared to some others.

I watched friends slowly becoming shadows of the happy, confident people they once were. There are people I grew up with, that I was close friends with, that simply dropped out of school and effectively disappeared. Sometimes I search Facebook for them, in the hope that I’ll see them smiling, living their lives somewhere else. But they never turn up.

I don’t solely blame the people who took things out on me. As a friend told me once ‘round here, bullying is pretty much generic‘. It seems like a flippant statement for something which ruins lives, but its true. The people in my school year who were bullies were picked on by kids in the year above. They were picked on by kids in the year above them. It went on and on.

I wish there was a simple solution to it, but what needs to change the most is people’s attitudes. It’s not right for this to happen, but it does. So why is no-one talking about it..?
Anyway, here’s the music video for you:

Get Your Party Started! Tunes for a night out..

Well I’m off out tonight, and I hope you are too! Here’s a few of my favourite rocky (this is a word now) dancefloor anthems. Because there really is nothing better than dancing like an idiot along with some of your closest friends. Or alone in your room. Whatever takes your fancy really!

Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness

Back when I was a student, me and my housemate made a name for ourselves at the Uni rock club by spinning around the room every time this song came on. As a result, the DJ played it at every night (this was a monthly thing, otherwise it would’ve gotten old pretty fast). I’ve been told the night just hasn’t been the same since we left.

Head Automatica – Beating Heart Baby

This is my favourite song to dance to of all time. Even if there’s no-one on the floor yet, I’ll be the one person braving it if this track comes on. Who cares what anyone else thinks..

Paramore – Misery Business

All personal relevance to the lyrics aside, this is a great track to dance to. Combine that with singing along as loud as you can (as long as no-one can hear you..) and you’ve got yourself a party!

Have a great night whatever you’re doing!
