Friday Classic – Linkin Park ‘Pts.OF.Athrty’

The soundtrack to my (and many others’) teenage angst, Pts.OF.Athrty is Linkin Park at their best. I’m sure I wasn’t the only teenager to have their first album, Hybrid Theory playing on repeat, loudly whilst I hid the in the darkened corner of my room.

Its hard to believe that the band are actually in their 17th year of existence. They’re one of a very few number of bands to mature gracefully, with a progressive sound that doesn’t alienate their original fanbase. (11 years on and this sci-fi themed video still looks modern too!).

What are they up to now?

The band are still going! They released their fifth album ‘Living Things’ last year and are about to embark on tour of Australia and New Zealand. Keep up to date with their goings on through their Facebook here..

New Video From Silverstein ‘Massachusetts’

For a bit of straight-up, growling post-hardcore, look no further than Canadian five piece Silverstein. This new offering from the band ‘Massachusetts’ will be going round your head all day after just one listen. To be honest, I’m wishing the band were touring the UK and not North America right now, because this a perfect mosh-pit inducing, fist pumping track.

Silverstein’s new album ‘This Is How The Wind Shifts’ is out now on Hopeless Records.

Wednesday Wish List – Abbey Dawn Shoes

Yes, its true. I do spend quite a lot of my free time hunting through clothing / shoe sites. It’s not an obsession, just something I really enjoy. Anyway, what makes me happier than finding a beautiful pair of shoes? Finding a beautiful pair of shoes that are in the sale. Even better than that (and I’m sure any other vegetarians reading this will agree) is finding a beautiful pair of shoes that aren’t made of leather. I’ve basically given up shoe shopping at Topshop, or any other store which I haven’t already researched online and found specific shoes that I know I can look at.

Boots are even more of a problem. Every year, I buy a cheap pair of boots from New Look (one of the few high street places to stock non-leather boots). Then they fall apart in just a month. Anyway, before I get too off topic, I rarely buy going out shoes. One of the few places that makes good quality evening shoes is the wonderful VeganChic.com, which, sadly, is based in the US and charges a small fortune for delivery. For the UK, there’s vegetarianshoes.co.uk, but nearly everywhere else seems to assume that if I want vegetarian shoes, the only thing I want to do with my life is go hiking round the Peak District. I kid you not.

That’s why I was more than happy when I saw these beauties (made from PU / PVC):

abbey dawn shoes

Part of the Abbey Dawn collection, designed by Avril Lavigne (don’t judge!), I’ve been eyeing them up for a while. At £79.99 though, they were more than a bit out of my price range! Luckily for me, Attitude Clothing have a sale on, so I’ll be snapping them up now for £24.99..

Do it. Do it now.

Alkaline Trio Back With New Album / Single

It seems to be the thing at the moment for some slightly-forgotten bands to make their return with a new album. What’s that called – reunited album season? There’s many a band that I’d like to see come back from an indefinite (or even undeclared) hiatus, but I’m always a bit cynical when they do.

The first question to ask it, have they gone in a new direction? Is the band suddenly inspired to return, they’ve patched up their problems and want to start over (see Fall Out Boy, yesterday). Otherwise, there’s always that worry that the new return-to-form will actually just be another album in a line of many others, where the band has already established their sound and don’t really know where to go with it.

This seems to be the case with the new offering from Alkaline Trio. Don’t get me wrong,  I’ve long been a fan of the band. It’s just something about the way new single ‘I Wanna Be A Warhol’ has me singing along unconsciously to the words of ‘Heart Stops Beating’ by +44. It’s not particularly bad. There’s nothing particularly good about it either though, which is disappointing coming from a band who’ve wowed me many times before.

Anyway, you can make up your own mind here:

‘I Wanna Be A Warhol’ is available from iTunes now. You can pre-order the new album ‘My Shame Is True’ from http://www.alkalinetriostore.com/, its out April 1.

Single Review: Fall Out Boy ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’

fall out boy

So Fall Out Boy are back. There’s a new album announced ‘Save Rock and Roll’ (a bit of an odd title, considering they’ve never been a rock and roll band – am I missing some irony here?) and a video released for first new single ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’. For once it seems the internet rumours are coming true.

Solo projects and a certain marriage / breakup with a female popstar aside, this is a band that haven’t had a huge amount of attention for a while. (In fact, a few months ago I found myself wondering whatever happened to them). The band must know that they’ve got to create something amazing to get back what they had.

It definitely sounds like they’re going in the right direction with ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’. On first listen, the song sounds fairly typical of Fall Out Boy. Catchy hooks, clever lyrics with a bite, good beat. Play it a few more times though, and it starts to sound darker, heavier. There’s more of an electro edge that we haven’t heard in Fall Out Boy’s music before. The vocals sound fiercer too.

There’s no mistaking the message that the band are putting whatever troubled past they might have had behind them. The video consists of rapper 2 Chainz burning the band’s memorabilia. The band’s Facebook page shows them doing the same (anyone else hoping Patrick hasn’t burnt his hat collection? I always liked his hats..).

To the band’s credit, this song does sound like they’re pretty tight. And they mean business.

Make up your own mind:

UK folks, you can catch the band at Camden Underworld on February 25. Tickets go on sale Feb 8 & 9.

Comment: Aiden Splitting Up After Next Album

Its slightly old news by this point anyway, but last week Wil Francis of Aiden announced that the band would be splitting up after their next album.

aiden

It’s always sad to watch a good band go. I’ve seen many in my time – Hell is for Heroes, Reuben, Hundred Reasons, to name a few..

Having never been in a band, its hard to imagine the pressures that go on in the member’s heads. You start out young, enthusiastic. It’s what you’ve always wanted to do. You play, people like it. You play more, more people like it. Maybe you sell a few demo CDs.

Then one night you’re playing and some guy turns up. He’s from a label. They’ve heard you guys play, you sound pretty good. He hands over a card.

You keep in touch. You write. You send over some tracks to the guy. You sign, you record an album.

The label puts it out and you wait for the money to roll in. The fame, the women, everything you dreamed of. You imagine your band’s name in lights above an arena, hordes of crowds chanting for you.

The money trickles in slowly. That’s fine, its the first album they say. The next one will do better. Or the next one.

You tour more, you write more. Your band is getting better and better. It feels so close, like you’re heading for something you never quite reach. The money’s never quite enough to live on. It was fine when you were younger, you were barely at home, didn’t have rent to make or bills to pay.

Now your friends have houses, wives, kids. They’ve settled and you haven’t, you’re still out there chasing the dream. People wonder why you’re still doing it. The scene you grew up in is gone. The bands either got too big and moved on, or never big at all and fizzled out. The records don’t sell like they used to. Even the shows aren’t as full, the fans have gone on to the next big thing – another group of teens that think they’ll own the world. You don’t know whether to envy them or pity them..

Rock Gigs in London – February

Well its a new month. Fresh start. Not so cold as January (hopefully!).

Anyway, here’s my monthly update of the best gigs coming up, February edition..

The most exciting one I can see on the horizon has to be the Kerrang Tour. It’s got Black Veil Brides headlining, with a bit of post-hardcore from Chiodos, pop-punk with Tonight Alive, and the always amazing, Fearless Vampire Killers.

London date is Brixton Academy on February 15th, but its up and down the country in the two weeks before that. In fact, its on the road already. Go catch it! (tickets are here).

your demise

Another not-to-miss gig is hardcore punks Your Demise hitting up the Garage, London on February 23. All UK dates and ticket links on their Facebook.

For a bit of nostalgia, (and to hear the new album, of course) be sure to check out Funeral For Friend. The Welsh lads have a pretty extensive UK tour lined up. If you can, definitely take the chance to see them playing the small places.. Dates here.

If none of this takes your fancy, try the ‘wild card’ option: Derby trio Lostalone are at London’s Borderline on February 24. With some great support from Kerrang! and NME, you won’t be seeing them at the mini-venues for much longer.. Tickets and dates here.

Friday Classic – The Distillers

Its going to be another quick post tonight – sorry! Here’s one of my favourite tracks from my teen years. It redefined the concept of riot girl, with a ferocious, modern take. Not to mention inspiring me to travel California alone, wanting to discover the ‘city of angels’ for myself.

Here you go, its The Distillers, featuring the amazing (can’t say enough good things about her, basically want to be her) Brody Dalle.
