To be honest, I didn’t even know that Ash were still going, but after hearing their surprisingly soft new single, ‘Free’, I wish I had kept more of a track on them. It may not have the energy of their early hits (we can’t be expecting ‘Girl From Mars‘ again, can we?), but this is the sound of a band who’ve reached their prime and know exactly how to write a great song.

Hailing from Melbourne, six piece Storm The Sky channel elements of Bring Me The Horizon with heavy metal undertones. The band have just released their self-funded debut record, ‘Permanence‘, having built a following in their native Australia through relentless touring since forming in 2013.

Well just in case you haven’t heard the last of the Download roundups (and hey, who hasn’t written one yet – except for me?), I thought I’d share one of the bands that really stood out over that muddy weekend gone.
If you didn’t already know, I am a huge AFI fan, so whenever someone tells me a band is ‘the next AFI’, I’m naturally pretty skeptical. Luckily, Aussie metalcore band Northlane manage to bring all the energy of the aforementioned band (in their early, angry days, not the later, glamorous days). If you don’t believe me, watch their new video for ‘Obelisk’ below..

If you’re going to see Death Cab For Cutie on their summer dates in the UK, you should definitely get there early. Edinburgh’s bouncy new indie rockers, We Were Promised Jetpacks will be there to get you in the dancing spirit (before you chill out to Death Cab, of course).

Sadly I missed We Are The Ocean playing at The Borderline in Soho earlier this month as it sold out! That doesn’t stop me enjoying their new single, Holy Fire though. It’s a much ‘bigger’ sound than you’d expect from the Loughton rockers (think more 30 Seconds To Mars, less screaming). There’s a nice violin piece and a creepy video featuring gas masks too, so that’s definitely worth checking out:

To anyone else who feels as old as I do watching Taking Back Sunday (hey, I was 16 when they first made it into my CD collection..), it’s surprising to see the early-emo starlets still making music, let alone all-grown-up tunes (admittedly, still with the classic TBS sound). Their new single, ‘Better Homes And Gardens‘ deals with the breakup of a marriage, a step forward from the tales of teenage romance that their earlier work focused on.

It’s rare to hear such a loud, arena-like sound from a band who have yet to release their debut record, but Sunset Sons appear to have managed it on their new single ‘Medicine’. Good thing too, as they’ll be supporting indie-rock giants Imagine Dragons on their European arena tour later this year.
If this video is anything to go by, the Anglo-Aussie quartet will be filling up arenas of their own in no time..

It’s rare to have a song combine teenage angst with summery pop melodies, especially when there’s whistling involved, but somehow Sleeping With Sirens have managed it! The Orlando troupe must have been taking in the sunshine ahead of us in rainy old Britain when they wrote their new single ‘The Strays‘, a softly-told tale of adolescent and belonging.

It’s been a long road for Bristol goth punks Ashestoangels, but they seem to be finally getting the recognition their hard works deserves, with solid features in Kerrang! and countless shows with the daddy of all things dark and screamy, William Control.
The band’s new single for ‘The Wake‘ showcases their impressive live shows, using solely fan created footage for the video and is taken from their new record ‘Horror Cult‘. Watch it below:

It’s starting to feel like summer here, and I’ve been rinsing through my guilty pleasures collection. It must be the sunshine that always puts me in the mood for a good, happy tune.
Rather than risk someone catching me with an old 90s classic in my headphones though, London four-piece Radio On make radio-friendly, danceable music without a hint of potential embarrassment. Drawing influences from 70s indie-rock, their new single ‘You’re Always Right‘ should definitely be the soundtrack to your day, whether its chilling in a park, or just blocking out the world on your daily commute..
